Consequence Free

I have been listening to my Great Big Sea CDs lately and one song has really spoken to me. The song is about living life to the fullest... a life without regrets. Similar to a revelation had by a friend of mine. I begining to think this song should become my anthem... a song to try to live by ;) Without further adieu, here is Consequence Free:
Wouldn't it be great, if no one ever got offended
Wouldn't it be great to say what's really on your mind
I have always said 'all the rules are made for bending'
And if I let my hair down, would that be such a crime?

[Chorus]
I wanna be consequence free
I wanna be where nothing needs to matter
I wanna be consequence free
just sing Na Na Na Na Na Ne Na Na Na

I could really use, to lose my Catholic conscience
Cuz I'm getting sick of feeling guilty all the time
I won't abuse it, Yeah I've got the best intentions
For a little bit of anarchy but not the hurting kind

[Chorus]

I couldn't sleep at all last night
cause I had so much on my mind
I'd like to leave it all behind,
but you know it's not that easy

[Chorus]

Wouldn't it be great, if the band just never ended
We could stay out late and we would never hear last call
We wouldn't need to worry about approval or permission,
we could - slip off the edge and never worry about the fall

[Chorus]

I would like to share this sentiment but unfortunately life just is not consequence free. Just ask the guy who yelled some insult at me and whose occupied baby carriage I subsequently knocked over and whose dog I kidnapped and held for ransom. He had to learn the hard way that there are consequences to your actions.

By consequence free they don't really mean completely consequence free.

"Wouldn't it be great, if no one ever got offended
Wouldn't it be great to say what's really on your mind"

The narrator wants to be able to speak his mind without offending/upsetting people. This is because in today's society people are too easily offended.

The song is not saying crimes should be consequence free, but that you should not worry about being "shot down" when approaching a member of the opposite sex. Or worry about offending someone with your opinion or joke.

I realize the song isn't perfect but songs tend to "over do it" in respects to a message and this one is no different.
